Brion W. Doherty and Robert J. Napleton obtained a $19,000,000 settlement on behalf of a young man that was shot by an unknown assailant near his home in an apartment complex on Chicago’s south side in 2015. The plaintiff, who was 15 years old at the time, alleged that the defendants were negligent in the way that they planned for and provided security at the property, ignoring known security risks that could decrease the chances of a shooting. The defendants argued that its security was adequate and that the shooting was an unfortunate consequence of random and unpredictable violence that occurs in Chicago, which cannot be prevented, and that the plaintiff was targeted as a result of a gang dispute. The settlement was paid by the security company and the management company for the apartment complex.
