$2 Million Dollar for Family of 17-year-old girl

The family of a 17-year-old girl settled their lawsuit against a Chicagoland medical practice regarding medical negligence that resulted in her death of a pulmonary embolism. From 03/25/19 to 07/02/19, the teenage girl was seen 4 times for complaints of shortness of breath and chest tightness. Two of the visits were with her primary care doctor’s office and two of her visits were in the urgent care of the medical practice. The teenage girl was a member of her high school track team and complained of shortness of breath after running for two miles. Defendants did not perform diagnostic tests or blood work to determine the cause of her complaints. She died in the early morning hours of 07/03/19 of a massive pulmonary embolism less than 6 hours after her final office visit with her primary care physician where she was diagnosed with seasonal allergies and exercise induced asthma. Based on the results of the autopsy, her family had genetic testing done that determined that the teenage girl likely suffered from a genetic clotting disorder known as Factor V Leiden mutation. The teenage girl was survived by her mother and her younger brother. $2,000,000.00 was paid by the self-insured medical practice. David J. Gallagher represented the family.
