Brion W. Doherty and Robert J. Napleton obtained a $5,900,000 settlement on behalf of a young man that was shot and rendered paraplegic by a man that was staying with a tenant across the hall from him. The plaintiff alleged that the landlord should have known that the man had a checkered past and stayed in the building. Plaintiff contended that his criminal background and behavior on the premises made him unsafe to other tenants and that he should have been barred from the building. The defendant building owner/manager denied knowing the man stayed on the premises (located in Blue Island, IL) and denied any knowledge that the man was dangerous.
