Napleton & Partners recovered $8,000,000 for the family of a 75-year-old man who was
injured and died after improper medical and surgical management. The patient had
originally been admitted to the Chicago area hospital for a planned heart valve surgery.
After the procedure, he was bleeding internally near a surgical site in his chest cavity.
The surgeon believed the bleed would stop with medication and the provision of blood
products. The family claimed that, because of the severity of the bleed, it was not going
to stop and required bringing the patient back to surgery in the hours after the surgery.
The patient ultimately went back to surgery about 8 hours later, but not before suffering
a cardiac arrest, which the family claimed was due to the loss of blood. The patient was
revived but suffered a variety of injuries due to the cardiac arrest, then suffered further
injuries to his limbs during his hospital stay. He passed away approximately 8 months
after the occurrence. The family was represented by Brion W. Doherty and Robert J.
Napleton.
