A $3,000,000 settlement was obtained on behalf of a 66-year-old widow who lost her 66-year-old husband during a failed gallbladder surgery. In February of 2023, a general surgeon at a Chicagoland area hospital performed an open gallbladder surgery. The surgeon noted in his operative report that he knew his anatomy and he was away from the portal triad. He applied a cutting device and encountered massive bleeding. A second surgeon came to assist and determined that the portal triad had been severed. The patient died later that evening during a second surgery to attempt to repair the damage that had been done. The settlement was made on behalf of a Chicagoland hospital and general surgeon. Brian C. Fetzer and Bradley Z. Schulman represented the plaintiff.
