$6.8 Million for Death of 60-year-old Teacher

The family of a 60-year-old high school teacher settled their lawsuit against a Chicagoland hospital regarding medical negligence that resulted in his death. In the early morning hours of May 27th, 2020, at approximately 12:45 a.m. the decedent went to the emergency room of a Chicagoland hospital with chest pain. The staff performed an ECG shortly after he arrived which was read as abnormal. The ECG showed ST depressions in leads V2-V4. This is a sign of ischemia or infarction. The decedent had blood for labs drawn at 1:06 a.m. The decedent’s troponin levels came back at 1:46 a.m. and were positive at .21. The decedent suffered a cardiac arrest in the waiting room and resuscitative efforts began at approximately 1:55 a.m. After a prolonged attempt to resuscitate the decedent, he was pronounced dead. The decedent is survived by his wife (57 at the time of death) and his two sons (27 and 22 at the time of death). $6,750,000 was paid by the self-insured hospital, $50,000 was paid by the emergency room physician’s insurance carrier. David J. Gallagher and Brian C. Fetzer of Napleton & Partners represented the family.
